The 2014 FIFA World Cup Loses Businesses Billions of Dollars in Productivity

Viewed by billions people worldwide, World Cup is the most celebrated sporting event in the world. How about this year? Let’s just say that things don’t change. The 2014 FIFA World Cup games are watched by 80 percent of the world’s population. Wow.

Unfortunately, all the hype means bad for the business world. How so?

The sick leave, the reduced on-office productivity, and other ‘by-products’ of following and actually watching football matches is costly for business.

In the US, businesses lost $390 million in productivity just from a single match between USA and Germany. In Europe, things even worse: In the UK, businesses expect to lose $6.79 billion in productivity – including 250 million working hours.
